Not everyone is suitable for LASIK. Several medical and ocular conditions can disqualify a patient. A thorough pre-operative evaluation identifies all disqualifying factors before any procedure.
Key Facts
- Corneal thickness below 480–500 microns (laser requires minimum tissue)
- Progressive keratoconus or corneal ectasia
- Unstable prescription (changed by more than 0.5D in the past 12 months)
- Severe dry eye disease (moderate dry eye is manageable but severe is contraindicated)
- Active autoimmune disease affecting the eye (lupus, rheumatoid arthritis-related eye disease)
Guidelines & Tips
- Pregnancy or breastfeeding (hormonal changes affect prescription stability)
- Age below 18 (prescription still changing in most cases)
- Very high prescription beyond the safe ablation limit for your corneal thickness
- Uncontrolled glaucoma (increased IOP during surgery is dangerous)
- History of herpes simplex keratitis (can reactivate with surgery)
- Pupil size above 7mm in dim light (increased halo risk with standard LASIK — wavefront may still be suitable)
