LASIK Recovery Timeline: Day-by-Day for the First 6 Months
LASIK recovery is one of the fastest in modern surgery — most patients have functional vision within hours and return to work in 1-2 days. But full healing takes 3-6 months, with specific milestones along the way. Here's exactly what to expect at every stage.
Day 0 (Surgery Day): First 24 Hours
0-2 hours post-surgery: Vision blurry, mild burning, watering, light sensitivity. Wear protective shield. Rest at home.
2-6 hours: Vision starts clearing. Most patients see noticeably better than with glasses by evening. Burning sensation reduces.
6-12 hours: Continue using prescribed eye drops. Avoid screens, eye rubbing, water in eyes.
Sleep: With protective shield on. Lie on back or unoperated side. Most patients sleep deeply due to mild fatigue from sedation.
Day 1-3: Initial Healing
Day 1: Mandatory follow-up at the centre. Surgeon removes shield, checks flap, confirms vision. Most patients have 20/20 or close to it. Begin full eye drop schedule (typically 3 types: antibiotic, anti-inflammatory, lubricant).
Day 2-3: Vision continues to improve. Mild redness and gritty sensation are normal. Continue all drops as prescribed.
Restrictions: - No eye rubbing (most important rule) - No water in eyes (showering OK with care) - No swimming - No eye makeup - No heavy lifting (under 5 kg) - Wear sunglasses outdoors
Week 1: Returning to Normal
Day 4-7: - Most desk-job patients return to work - Vision is now 80-90% of final - Reading, computer work comfortable with frequent breaks - Sleep without shield from day 7-10 (per surgeon's instruction) - Light walking allowed; no gym, no contact sports, no swimming
Driving: Usually allowed from day 2-3 once vision check confirms safety. Avoid night driving for first week.
Common sensations: Slight halos around lights at night (normal — settles over 2-4 weeks), occasional dryness, mild floaters.
Week 2-4: Stabilising
Week 2: - Light gym, yoga (no inversions or eye-pressing positions) - Travel allowed - Continue eye drops as tapering schedule indicates - Most halos and night-vision artifacts begin resolving
Week 3-4: - Vision typically reaches final clarity for moderate prescriptions - Higher prescriptions may continue improving for another 2-4 weeks - Begin reducing artificial tears (continue if dry-eye sensation persists) - All restrictions except contact sports lifted
Month 1-3: Full Recovery
Month 1 follow-up: Comprehensive vision check, dry-eye assessment. Most patients are at final or near-final vision. New glasses prescription not needed for 90-95% of patients.
Month 2-3: - Contact sports, swimming with goggles, scuba diving allowed - High-altitude travel OK - Most night-vision side effects fully resolved - Continue lubricating drops only if needed
Final follow-up: Around month 3-4. Confirms long-term healing, finalises any need for enhancement (rare — 1-3% of patients).
Month 3-6 and Beyond
Months 3-6: Final stability achieved. Vision should be exactly as expected from the surgical plan.
Long-term care: - Annual eye exams recommended (same as anyone else) - Lubricating drops only if dry-eye symptoms persist (rare beyond 6 months) - No special ongoing restrictions - Reading glasses will eventually be needed after age 40 (presbyopia is unaffected by LASIK)
When to return urgently: Sudden vision changes, severe pain, increasing redness, flashes/floaters/curtain shadow (signs of retinal issues unrelated to LASIK).
Expert Insight
The patients who recover best follow three rules: (1) use eye drops exactly as prescribed for the full duration, (2) don't rub their eyes for at least 4 weeks, and (3) attend every follow-up. Patients who skip drops, rub aggressively, or skip follow-ups are the ones who develop preventable issues. LASIK recovery is forgiving but not infinitely so — basic discipline in the first month locks in great long-term results.
