Staying active is important, but after LASIK surgery your cornea needs time to heal fully before you resume strenuous physical activity. Here is a complete guide to exercising after LASIK.
Exercise Return Timeline
- Light walking: Day 1–2 after surgery
- Stationary cycling / light stretching: After 3–5 days
- Running / jogging: After 1 week
- Yoga (non-inverted poses): After 1 week
- Weight training / gym: After 2 weeks
- Inverted yoga poses: After 4 weeks
- Contact sports: After 4–6 weeks with protective eyewear
- Swimming / water sports: After 4–6 weeks
Why Rest Is Important
Strenuous exercise raises intraocular pressure, produces sweat that can irritate healing eyes, and increases the risk of accidentally rubbing or bumping your eyes. In the first 1–2 weeks, the corneal flap is still integrating — any physical trauma to the eye during this period could theoretically displace it.
Protective Eyewear for Sports
When you do return to contact sports, always wear certified sports protective eyewear (polycarbonate lenses). This is good practice for any sport involving risk of eye injury.
