Swimming is one of the activities requiring the longest waiting period after LASIK surgery. Understanding why helps you protect your investment and your vision.
When Can You Swim After LASIK?
- Swimming pool: Wait at least 4 weeks after surgery
- Ocean / sea water: Wait at least 4–6 weeks
- Hot tubs and whirlpools: Wait at least 6–8 weeks
- Water sports: Wait at least 6–8 weeks and wear protective goggles when resuming
Why Swimming Must Be Avoided
After LASIK, the corneal flap is healing and has not yet fully integrated at its edges during the first 3–4 weeks. Pool water and ocean water both contain bacteria, chlorine, salt, and microorganisms that can penetrate the healing corneal flap and cause serious infection (microbial keratitis). Even brief submersion carries significant risk during this healing window.
Showering After LASIK
Regular showering is generally safe from Day 2 onwards, provided water does not directly hit your eyes. Tilt your head back while washing hair for the first 2 weeks.
Getting Back to Swimming
When you do return to the pool (after 4+ weeks), wear well-fitting swimming goggles for the first few months to protect against chlorine irritation, which can exacerbate dry eyes — a common post-LASIK side effect.
