How SMILE works
A femtosecond laser shapes a thin disc of tissue (a lenticule) inside the cornea. The surgeon removes it through a small keyhole incision, which changes the cornea's curvature and corrects the prescription. SMILE Pro uses a faster laser, so the laser part takes under 10 seconds per eye.
Because the surface is barely opened, fewer corneal nerves are cut — the main reason dry eye after SMILE tends to be milder.
Who SMILE suits — and who it doesn't
SMILE is often considered if you:
- Are short-sighted (roughly −1 to −10), with or without astigmatism
- Already have dry eyes or long screen hours
- Play contact sports or work in uniformed services
When SMILE isn't the right choice
It is not used for long-sightedness (hyperopia) at present, and very irregular corneas are usually better treated with topography-guided Contoura. The evaluation decides which fits your eyes.
