PRK (Photorefractive Keratectomy) recovery is slower than LASIK because no flap is created — instead the surface epithelium is removed and allowed to regenerate. Expect 3–7 days for functional vision and 1–3 months for full stabilisation.
Key Facts
- Day 1–3: Significant discomfort, blurry vision, light sensitivity — all normal
- Day 4–7: Surface epithelium regenerates; vision begins to improve
- Week 2–4: Vision steadily improves but may fluctuate
- Month 1–3: Final prescription stabilises; vision reaches its best outcome
- PRK final results are equivalent to LASIK — just a longer recovery process
Guidelines & Tips
- Pain is managed with prescribed anti-inflammatory and analgesic drops for the first 3–5 days
- Bandage contact lenses are placed on the eye and removed after 5–7 days
- Use all prescribed drops (antibiotic, steroid, lubricating) exactly as instructed
- Avoid driving for the first week minimum — vision is unreliable early in PRK recovery
- UV protection is even more critical in PRK recovery than LASIK — wear sunglasses at all times outdoors
- Attend all follow-up appointments closely — PRK requires more monitoring than LASIK
