How Epi-Contoura works
The thin outer skin of the cornea (epithelium) is removed, the laser reshapes the cornea using your topography map, and a bandage contact lens is placed while the epithelium grows back. With the StreamLight technique, the laser itself removes the epithelium, so nothing touches the eye.
Because no flap is made, more of the cornea's thickness and strength is left intact.
Epi-Contoura vs Contoura
Both give a similar final result. The difference is the route there:
- Contoura (with flap): vision clear in 1–2 days; needs enough corneal thickness for a flap
- Epi-Contoura (no flap): 3–5 days of watering and light sensitivity; preferred for thin corneas
- Epi-Contoura has no flap that could be dislodged by a later eye injury
