ReLEx SMILE (Small Incision Lenticule Extraction) represents the next generation of laser vision correction — a completely flapless procedure that is gentler and faster-healing. Here is everything you need to know.
How SMILE Works
In SMILE, a femtosecond laser creates a small disc of corneal tissue (lenticule) inside the cornea without cutting a flap. This lenticule is then removed through a tiny 2–3mm incision. The cornea reshapes automatically, correcting the refractive error.
SMILE vs LASIK — Key Differences
- Flap: LASIK creates a flap; SMILE is completely flapless
- Dry eye risk: SMILE has lower dry eye risk due to smaller incision
- Recovery: LASIK is slightly faster (24–48 hrs vs 2–5 days for SMILE)
- Best for thin corneas: SMILE is an excellent choice
- Prescription range: SMILE treats -1D to -10D (myopia and astigmatism only, not hyperopia)
SILK vs SMILE
SILK (Smooth Incision Lenticule Keratomileusis) is an even newer evolution using a 6th-generation femtosecond laser with a smoother lenticule interface and faster extraction. Both SILK and SMILE Pro deliver excellent outcomes — our surgeons recommend the right choice based on your corneal profile.
