What Makes Contoura Vision Different

Standard LASIK corrects based on your prescription — sphere, cylinder, axis. Two patients with the same prescription receive essentially the same treatment.

Contoura Vision corrects based on your unique corneal shape. The Topolyzer Vario maps 22,000 points across your cornea, identifying microscopic irregularities invisible in a standard eye exam. The Alcon WaveLight EX500 laser then customises treatment to your exact corneal topography.

Aim: In suitable eyes, better visual quality, contrast and night vision than prescription-only treatment. Some patients see better than 20/20, but this can't be guaranteed.

How the Procedure Works

Step 1 — Mapping (15-20 minutes): Topolyzer Vario captures multiple high-resolution scans of your cornea. The system creates a 3D topographic map.

Step 2 — Surgical Planning: The surgeon reviews maps for asymmetry, irregular astigmatism, or higher-order aberrations. Treatment plan is customised to YOUR cornea, not a generic prescription.

Step 3 — Surgery (10-15 minutes): - Anaesthetic drops are applied (no needles) - Femtosecond laser creates a thin corneal flap (under 30 seconds) - Flap is gently lifted - Excimer laser reshapes underlying cornea per your custom plan (under 1 minute per eye) - Flap is repositioned — no stitches needed

Step 4 — Recovery: Most patients see clearly within 4-6 hours, return to work in 24-48 hours.

Reported Benefits Over Standard LASIK

Clinical studies of topography-guided LASIK have reported potential advantages over standard LASIK in:

Who Is the Ideal Contoura Vision Candidate?

Suitable candidates typically have:

• Myopia up to -8.0 D
• Hyperopia up to +4.0 D
• Astigmatism up to -3.0 D
• Adequate corneal thickness (480+ microns)
• Stable prescription for 12+ months
• No keratoconus or corneal disease
• Healthy retina and overall eye health
• Realistic expectations

Some surgeons prefer SMILE or ICL for thin corneas, very high prescriptions, or active sports lifestyles. A detailed evaluation determines what's right for your eyes.

Contoura Vision vs LASIK: What Is the Difference?

Contoura Vision is not an alternative to LASIK — it is a type of LASIK. The flap is made the same way, the excimer laser is the same type, and the recovery is the same. The difference lies only in how the laser treatment is planned.

What stays the same:

• Bladeless femtosecond flap, lifted and replaced without stitches
• Day of surgery, numbing drops, procedure time
• Recovery, precautions and follow-up schedule
• Eligibility basics — stable prescription, healthy cornea of adequate thickness

What is different:

• Planning data. Standard LASIK plans from your glasses prescription; Contoura plans from a detailed map of your cornea plus your prescription.
• Centration. Contoura treatment is centred on the eye's visual axis — the line you actually see along — rather than simply the centre of the pupil.
• What it can correct. Besides your power, Contoura can smooth small corneal irregularities that glasses cannot correct.
• Pre-operative scans. More, and repeated, topography scans are needed for a reliable plan.

For a very regular cornea the visible difference may be modest; for corneas with small irregularities, or for people who care greatly about night vision and contrast, it tends to be more meaningful.

Why Your Contoura Plan May Differ From Your Glasses Prescription

It is normal for the astigmatism measured by Contoura's corneal map to differ slightly from the astigmatism in your glasses prescription. Your glasses correct the whole eye, including the effect of the natural lens inside, which can partly offset the cornea's astigmatism. The topography map measures only the cornea.

Your surgeon reconciles these two measurements before finalising the treatment. Some surgeons use specialised planning methods or software to decide how much of the measured astigmatism to treat, and in which direction. This is a skilled step, and it is one reason the same technology can give different results in different hands.

What you can do to help:

• Stop contact lenses before your scans for as long as your centre advises — usually around a week for soft lenses and longer for rigid lenses — because lenses temporarily change the cornea's shape
• Avoid eye make-up on the scan day
• Mention dryness; a poor tear film can distort the scans and may need treating first
• Bring old prescriptions so your surgeon can confirm your power has been stable

Epi-Contoura: Contoura Without a Flap

Epi-Contoura is the name centres use for topography-guided Contoura treatment applied to the corneal surface, PRK-style, instead of under a LASIK flap. Because no flap is made, it can be an option for some people whose corneas are thinner or who have jobs or sports with a risk of eye injury, while still getting a topography-guided plan.

The trade-off is the same as for any surface treatment: the first few days are more uncomfortable and vision takes longer to clear — usually about a week to return to normal activities, and several weeks to sharpen fully. When Contoura Vision Is Not the Right Choice

Contoura is an excellent option for many people, but some eyes are better served by a different procedure:

• Keratoconus or progressive corneal thinning — LASIK, including Contoura, is not advised. Corneal cross-linking to stabilise the cornea comes first; any later vision treatment is a specialist decision.
• Corneas too thin for a flap — surface treatment (PRK or Epi-Contoura), SMILE in some cases, or an ICL may be considered.
• Very high power beyond the comfortable laser range — an ICL is often preferred.
• Unstable prescription — wait until your power has been stable for at least a year.
• Significant untreated dry eye — treat it first; it can affect both the scans and your recovery.
• Early cataract — lens surgery may make more sense than corneal laser.
• High-impact contact sports or uniformed jobs — a flapless option such as SMILE or PRK may be preferred.
