What Causes Presbyopia?

Inside your eye, the natural lens changes shape to focus on objects at different distances. This is called accommodation. As you age, the lens becomes stiffer and the muscles weaker — gradually losing the ability to focus on close objects.

• Ages 38-42: First symptoms — fine print becomes harder
• Ages 45-50: Need reading glasses for most near tasks
• Ages 55-65: Maximum presbyopia, lens almost completely rigid
• After 65: Often combined with early cataract

Monovision contact lenses: One eye corrected for distance, the other for near. Brain combines them. Works for many but not everyone.

Monovision LASIK: Same principle as monovision contacts — one eye corrected for distance, other for near. Best tested with contacts first. ₹50K-₹1.5L for both eyes.

Presbyopic LASIK / PresbyMAX: Specialised LASIK technique that creates a multifocal cornea. Provides distance + near vision in both eyes. Requires careful patient selection. ₹1.5L-₹2.2L for both eyes.

PRELEX (Refractive Lens Exchange): Your natural lens is replaced with a multifocal or trifocal IOL — same lens used in cataract surgery. Best option for patients 50+. Permanently solves presbyopia AND prevents future cataract surgery. ₹2L-₹3.5L for both eyes.

Corneal inlays (KAMRA, Raindrop): Small inserts placed in the cornea — less common today as outcomes were mixed.

• 40-50, no other vision issues: Reading glasses or progressives. Surgery rarely needed.
• 45-55, want freedom from glasses, currently wear glasses for distance: Monovision LASIK or Presbyopic LASIK.
